Move on The Move on Orders!

Summary Offences (Move-On Orders) Amendment Bill

WHAT IS THIS BILL ABOUT?

  • Basically, this Bill is about allowing the Police to move our street communities away from our town centres and shops, just for being there.

  • If it goes ahead, this would allow the Police to move people (including those who are rough sleeping and begging) to other areas of the city.

  • If these people go back to these areas - within the time the Police required them to leave - they could face fines or even imprisonment.

Working closely with our whānau who are sleeping rough we know that while Move-on powers may temporarily shift visibility of hardship, they do not address the underlying causes or create pathways toward long-term wellbeing, housing stability or safety.

We are calling on the Government to invest in what works: Affordable housing, reducing access barriers to healthcare and addiction support and critically, Increasing the number of funded Housing First placements.
